There are two important deadlines for applicants:

WHAT IS THE CONDITION IMPROVEMENT FUND?

The Condition Improvement Fund provides grants to eligible educational establishments to help maintain and improve school buildings and grounds, including projects that address health, safety and compliance issues.

Eligible applicants include:
  • Eligible schools and single academies
  • Small multi-academy trusts
  • Voluntary schools
  • Sixth form colleges

In previous funding rounds, priority has been given to projects addressing building compliance, health and safety concerns and urgent condition needs.
With Martyn’s Law coming into effect in April 2027, schools will also need to consider how they can improve their emergency preparedness. The provision of effective lockdown and invacuation alert systems may therefore be an important consideration for schools preparing their funding applications.
The total budget for the 2027/28 fund has not yet been announced. However, in the previous funding round, £450 million was allocated to 813 school projects.

WHY SHOULD SCHOOLS CONSIDER ALERТEX LOCKDOWN SYSTEMS?

Schools need to ensure that their lockdown alert is clearly distinguishable from their fire alarm. The two alerts communicate very different instructions:
  • FIRE ALARM: Evacuate the building.
  • LOCKDOWN ALERT: Stay inside and move to a place of safety.

Martyn’s Law also places greater emphasis on having clear and unambiguous arrangements for alerting people to a potential terrorist attack. This is particularly relevant to schools and other public venues within the scope of the legislation.
The Alertex wireless lockdown system provides a distinct, site-wide alert that can help schools communicate emergencies quickly and effectively.
Unlike a conventional fire alarm, Alertex lockdown sounders feature a blue flashing beacon, making the alert visually and audibly distinctive.
For schools that prefer a spoken announcement, the Alertex range also includes annunciators with a library of pre-recorded messages, or the option to record bespoke messages. These can be combined with sounder/beacon units to suit different areas of a school. For example, SEND facilities and nurseries may benefit from familiar voices or tailored audio messages.

THE BENEFITS OF ALERТEX

Alertex offers a flexible and cost-effective solution for schools looking to improve their emergency alert arrangements.

Wireless installation
All units are battery-powered and can be installed quickly in the most suitable locations to provide effective coverage. No cabling is required, helping to reduce installation time, disruption and cost. The wireless nature of the system also means that schools can start their Martyn’s Law compliance journey and add to the system as budgets allow.

Coordinated site-wide alerts
With a long wireless transmission range, activating one Alertex unit triggers other Alertex devices within range, helping to ensure that the alert is communicated across the site.

Centralised monitoring and reporting
The Alertex portal allows schools to identify which unit has been activated and provides useful system information, including low-battery alerts and reporting functions.

Desktop alerts
Schools can also configure desktop notifications, helping to ensure that relevant staff are made aware when the lockdown system is activated.

Local network operation
The Alertex portal operates over the school’s local network, rather than relying on an external cloud connection, helping to reduce exposure to cyber-related disruption.
